It seems the whole world has recently discovered the amazing combination of  Sweet and Salty. From Chocolate  sprinkled with Sea Salt or paired with Salty Pretzels to Salad with Sweet Fruits and Salty Nuts. Even Potato chips and Cookies are now made in Sweet and Salty versions.It’s the craze and I love it!

Yet for me this is far from a new concept, for me it goes back 50 years.  Yes it is true, not only am I really that old, lol, but when I was 7 years old my ( NeNe’)grandmother Pauline was the first to introduce me to this combination of flavors. Some of my best memories are sitting around the table at my Aunt Dolly’s home in PA sharing stories, laughter and traditions with my cousins, grandmother, Aunt and Uncle.

My Aunt Dolly’s table always adorned with an assortment of olives, cheeses, fruits like fresh figs and jams,  cured meats and of course a big loaf of crusty bread. The feta was usually drizzled with olive oil and oregano and of course the crusty bread just sopped up all the delicious flavors.

Sitting around her table as a little girl listening and laughing with my cousins is a vivid memory, even 50 years later. Yet the memory that stands out just as much is watching my (NeNe’) grandmother slice up Crisp Sweet Watermelon and Salty firm Feta Cheese sometimes adding some fig jam or fresh figs to the mix and popping them in her mouth together. I remember all the siblings slinging words such as “yuck, gross, eww”, she just laughed and told us how delicious this was.

Little did we all know that 50 years later it would be the hottest combination around the world. I even remember her putting extra salt on the watermelon if the feta cheese she was eating was not salty enough for her. Today you will certainly find a version of the Watermelon and Feta Salad at many wonderful restaurants.

This recipe is in honor of my NeNe’ and my version of this sweet and salty combination. The kebobs are perfect for a party appetizer/ finger food that guests can pick up and eat as they mingle through the party. A much prettier vision then walking around with a salad bowl in your hand and that piece of lettuce that just won’t let go, hanging from your mouth, lol!

I have added fresh mint to this recipe along wiht the fig jam drizzle, just the smell brings a warm feeling in my heart for my beloved grandmother. This is for you NeNe’!


Watermelon, Feta and Mint Kebobs with a Fig Jam Drizzle                   Watermelon, Feta and Mint Kebob with Fig Jam Drizzle

Prep time: 20 min          yields: 20 kebobs

1  large watermelon  (seedless)

2 pound block of a firm Feta Cheese

1 x 12.3oz jar of fig jam

1 /2 cup fresh mint sprigs

20 small wooden skewers

1x 11oz bag of Arugula


Cut watermelon into 60 small 1×1 or 2×2 inch cubes set aside. Cut the block of feta cheese into 40 small 1×1 or 2×2 in cubes. Break the mint into small sprigs, chop remaining leaves into small pieces. Place contents of fig jam in a microwave container and microwave on med heat for about 1 minute or until melted through. To assemble, take a skewer and start with a piece of watermelon followed by feta. Each  skewer will require 3 pieces of watermelon, two  pieces of feta, a sprig of mint and a drizzle of fig jam melted. Assemble the skewers, place a mint spring in the middle of skewer and place on a platter that is covered with the arugula, drizzle the kebob with the fig jam and sprinkle with chopped mint.

These are delicious, easy to eat and again  you get the WOW factor when your guests see these cute little kebobs adorning your buffet table . Or for a sit down dinner, replace a salad with one kebob on a salad plate with the arugula. Make a light vinaigrette by just adding 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the fig jam and mix well.  This makes a more salad like dressing, it is delicious!
